got to keep in time!

I asked a friend for a melody. He gave me a response via voice clip, which is the first clip in the zip file.

I bastardized his (very cool) "I don't think I could" rhythm in making my clips. Maybe I'll make a correct version sometime. Not now, though.

So in response to my three clips, he sent me what is the fifth clip in the zip file. The clips that follow are the process of my first attempt at fugue writing! I don't really know all the rules (or even half, probably), but I like the result for now.

oh. P.S. ...I wasn't exactly going for optimal voice quality with that last entering part. I know, sometimes these performances are a bit sloppy. I'll endeavor to keep them cleaner and better quality from now on.

Oh dear...dear oh dear...

I just made this. It was very, very fun.

a different kind of fanfare

On IM, a friend told me he got a new job. So I whipped this up. Can you hear the parallel fifths? That's why "..tulations.." sounds odd. I think.

Oh, and it's a little loud.

In the chocolate, the shell of chocolate...

I was having a conversation with a friend about candy bars, and mentioned that my favorite was Milky Way, but also that I didn't eat them anymore because of how bad they are nutritionally. So I decided to make a song about it instead (it's a little more complicated than that, but the nitty-gritty isn't necessary). You probably know the tune...

Okay, here are a few more clips.

The first is from a video game series...it's a "victory" fanfare from when you win a fight, which I decided to do in vocals.

The second is actually just an imitation of a character on Firefly. No music. For those who haven't seen the show but decide to listen to this anyway, the character, named Wash playing with two toy dinosaurs--a stegasaurus and allosaurus, I believe. By the by, Firefly is an amazing show. Go rent it, a disc at a time, at your local video store. Never have I fallen in love with a cast of characters so quickly as with that show.

Uh, and a bit where I go through my process of adding harmonies to a melody.

Thriving...like a sloth!

Okay, okay...I'm the type of person to get excited about a project and then not continue it, as soon as it becomes something not entirely new. But today I will post more material.

A new riddle:

Guide to friends and family,
and marker for the lost;
for end of filler's journey,
a temporary host.

And another voice clip, this time very short. Just made this up when a friend was incidentally busy on MSN messenger (playing a game, cooking, I dunno, could've been anything). She has before stated that she's usually doing several things at once, which inspired the clip.

Sleeves of Yellow and Blue

I.E., my first post with content! I once had an IM conversation in which I discovered that my friend did not know what a picardy third was. I explained: a picardy third is when a song or piece of music in a minor key suddenly switches to a major key for the very last chord, making the ending feel "happier". I chose Greensleeves to illustrate, and recorded a phrase with two endings--minor, then major:

And now, for a riddle:

A line between beachwalker and sea,
or barrier keeping heat from running free;
To the lips of a man in pleasant respite,
or from the lips of a beast inclined to bite.

This Blog

Yeess, this is a fertile blog, and it will thrive. I will make a first post in this blog, and I will call it: "This Blog".

*ahem*

Okay, so this is a blog where basically I post cool little things that I make. The clips are just me messing around with vocal harmonies and such. Many of them arose from IM conversations, where a person said something that inspired me to make a little clip. There may also be some guitar clips, but I don't do that much anymore. And then there are the riddles, which you are free to attempt to solve. Please send any guesses to benjaminkh2@hotmail.com so as not to spoil the answer for anyone else.

I'd love feedback! If you like or dislike a certain clip or riddle, lemme know! And don't be afraid to say why. I may be inclined to try more of a certain kind of thing, or to try to do a better job next time. (Of course, if it's just a clash of taste, well, you can tell me that too, but I probably won't be changing my taste. I like silly, mirthful things, for one.)

So yeah. I'll have some actual stuff to look at/listen to soon, and we'll see how it goes.
